Varsity Wrestling · OHS Wrestling takes Seven to State Tournament

After taking three wrestlers in the past three seasons, Ooltewah High School took 7 state qualifiers to this year’s TSSAA State Tournament in Franklin, TN. Ooltewah is in one of the toughest regions in the state with Bradley Central, Cleveland, Soddy Daisy, Walker Valley, East Hamilton, Rhea County and McMinn County and with only the top four in each of the 14 weight classes, getting a state bid can prove to be difficult. This year’s group of seniors has been in the varsity lineup for 3 or 4 seasons. Seniors, Justice McClure (138), Easton Norris (145), Marek Banks (170) and Kevin Chang (285) all made it to the show. Three underclassmen qualified as well: Freshman Roman Evans (113), Sophomore Roby Thomas (126) and Junior Tucker Miller (152). Three wrestlers, Kevin Chang, Easton Norris and Roby Thomas all won two matches on Thursday to advance to Friday. Chang won his first match and was one win away from the podium. “These 7 wrestlers,” Coach Manning said, “especially these seniors who have been here with Coach Dunbar and I, have helped put our program back in the right direction and have given us something to build on.”
